So you have proven there are assholes of every stripe. A more fair comparison would be “Jesus is a Cunt” juxtaposed with “God Hates Fags.”

    • DADvocate says:

I’ve never personally seen a “God Hates Fags” sign. For some here, not personally observing something means it so insignificant as to not matter. Perhaps you can do that. I happened to see the “Straight Pride” bumper sticker and came across the Jesus t-shirt during my normal web surfing.

Is a gay pride bumper sticker a sign of an asshole? Why or why not? I see gay pride/rainbow stickers frequently. Are straights not allowed to have pride in themselves? I also regularly see bumper stickers, t-shirts or such insulting to Christians. I don’t see the straight pride sticker as being a sign of an asshole. He wasn’t insulting anyone.

One day I was walking down the street in Cincinnati when a guy in a car started yelling something at me about some bishop being a rapist, etc. I just stopped and looked at him like he was an idiot and he drove off. Wondering why he said anything to me, I realized I had on a black polo shirt and happened to be walking some Catholic agency at the moment he drove by. He probably didn’t notice my blue jeans and thought I was a priest. It’s always a sign of courage to yell insults at a priest knowing he won’t hurt you, although he may pray for you. Kind of like picking on the Amish.

Who besides Fred Phelps, who is roundly condemned by all mainstream Christians, carries “God Hates Fags” signs? (Oddly, he does it at funerals for soldiers, not gay related events.)

      • Mustang Sally says:

Sorry I wasn’t clear. I took your post to mean that the (possibly some kind of liberal guy) was more hateful. I agree. He is an ass-hat.

The only time I have personally seen the exact “God Hates Fags” sign was in fact courtesy of Fred Phelps. I was working on a traditional 1930s musical many years ago and we stopped in Topeka KS, home town of the woman playing the lead. Phelps and his crowd came out and protested the show. It wasn’t a show about gay issues; I think their reason for being there is that it was theatre and so there must be gays. Which there were. Good news, the people of Topeka ignored them and the show sold out.

If finding a pic of a guy on the internet counts as “personally observing” then these signs should count as well.
        How about:
        - “Jesus loves you and has a wonderful plan for your life: Hell”
        - “Homosexuals are possessed by demons”
        - “AIDS isn’t a disease it’s a cure”
        and my personal favorite,
-”Homo-Sex is a threat to national security”
        (how?)

Perhaps it would be enlightening to examine the reasons behind the “gay pride” slogan. For so so long being gay was considered something shameful. It became slowly more acceptable, but still something one shouldn’t talk about. Then there was a sea change of sorts where people in the gay community decided they wouldn’t hide anymore, and many made/make a point of being out in order to encourage others to do the same.
There is no correlation for the straight community. There is no shame in being straight and no social, economic or civil disadvantages for being straight. So when someone has a “straight pride” sticker, I have to wonder what point they are trying to make. At the very least it seems to be something along the lines of making fun the gay movement. So then I wonder why would someone belittle the struggles of a minority group. It leads me to conclude that someone would only make a point of that if s/he either thinks gay equality is unnecessary or undesirable. “Asshole” and “bigot” seem like strong words for that, but it is disingenuous to pretend s/he is only taking pride in being straight.

Personally, I am annoyed by the use of Cunt as a negative. Unless of course Mr. Dreadlocks means “Jesus is a Cunt and boy do I love vaginas and I love Jesus too.”

    • DADvocate says:

I don’t understand the use of cunt as a pejorative, literally. It’s a vulgar word but makes no sense as an insult.

      • wiredsisters says:

Same goes for its male counterpart, right? Just more semantic nullwords.

        • JMK says:

          Hmmmm, not sure about that.

After all , we all intuitively KNOW what the phrase, “Whatta DICK!” means. . .and it’s not “sexual,” it’s more an indictment of overall dorkiness/dickishness.

Same with the feminine vulgarity. . .it is clearly (generally) NOT used in a “sexual context,” but in an insulting context to those (for instance) who don’t/won’t stand up for what they believe in, especially when the chips are down.

    • JMK says:

Hmmmm…as someone who has both been CALLED and called others “a cunt” – ALWAYS as a prelude to a physical altercation, I really don’t get the hyper-sensitivity. Of course, I’m also the kind of jackass who tells fat-jokes in front of 300+ pound people. . .or, at least I was, I don’t tell many jokes now-a-days….I don’t sing or dance either.

I hope you wouldn’t be offended by the equally ubiquitous, “You throw like a girl insult, because it’s rooted in TRUTH! Ever see a woman throw anything? It can be pretty comical.

Men and women are DIFFERENT because males and females are constructed differently. They are physically, emotionally and in most other ways different. That doesn’t make one (necessarily) better than the other (EXCEPT in throwing), it’s just that they’re “different.”

AND most women should be thankful for those DIFFERENCES. Without them NO guys would EVER even talk to yas.

      • Mustang Sally says:

        Dear JMK,

With only friendly intentions, may I suggest that you examine what you just did in the above comment. I said “annoyed” and you turned it into “offended” and accused me of being “hyper-sensitive”. I never said I was OFFENDED. This is a recurring event that makes it frustrating to communicate with you.

        Bests,
        Sally

        • JMK says:

I don’t believe I said you were “offended.” It appears you assumed that.

          ALL human communication is difficult.

WE ALL routinely use the same words to mean explicitly different things.

That’s normal and natural and started with the earliest attempts at communication.

As I implied. . .(I NEVER said the word “offend”, or “offense” just implies that it’s used as a way to block another’s way out. . .you can’t really back down to that). . .I DO very much get “offended” and “mean offense” when I call a guy or am called. . .a cunt. It’s always a prelude to physical violence.

You hear that and you KNOW you’re in for a serious confrontation.

Here’s, of course, where things get a bit dicey. You now “owe me,” in my view.

That is, since you claimed I said something I didn’t, I believe I have the right to claim you said something you didn’t at some future (unspecified) date. I’ve done tjhat with others here.

A couple of people originally thought “that SHOULD only work ONE WAY.” Meaning that, since they (erroneously) believe that “liberalism” is right or more moral and Conservatism less so, that it should only work in ONE WAY.

I’ve convinced everyone here (Steve, ETH, even the departed LCJ) that it MUST go BOTH WAYS, and we now seem to all agree on that and agree that there isn’t one ideology that has anything like a claim to any “moral high ground.”

      • Edward T Haines says:

Yep, those ladies pitching in women’s softball teams barely get the ball across the plate at about 80 or so MPH

        • Edward T Haines says:

I should learn to research before typing. The ladies pitches reach up to about 70 to 73 MPH. Men in softball pitch up to about 80 to 83 MPH. Both have multiple pitches (screwball, curve, riser, change up, etc.

          • JMK says:

AGAIN, it appears you’ve dressed up another AGREEMENT as though you disagree with me.

Here. you very clearly explain why men’s and women’s sporting events are segregated by gender (the disparity in things like pitching speeds).

The USA’s women’s basketball teams almost certainly COULDN’T beat the last place men’s team (whatever nation they’re from). In fact, some top boy’s HS teams would almost certainly defeat the USA women’s team.

Vitas Gerulaitis was almost certainly understating things a bit, when he said, “The top ranked female tennis player in the world today probably couldn’t come close to beating the 100th ranked male.”

BUT that’s why we segregates sporting events by gender, isn’t it?!

I agree with you Ed, but I believe it’s vital that we keep those events gender-segregated.

          • Edward T. Haines says:

“Ever see a woman throw anything? It can be pretty comical.”
How silly of me to perceive this as a humorous attempt to impugn the athletic skills of women in throwing balls or other objects.

          • JMK says:

“Ever see a woman throw anything? It can be pretty comical.” (JMK)

            .
            .
Yes, that is plainly observably true, the vast majority (over 95%???) of men and women throw differently.

NOT noticing and accepting (even APPRECIATING and laughing at such differences when appropriate) such differences (as I do) tends to lead toward bigotry, like unfairly and unreasonably holding females to different ie. LOWER) standards.

I know we do segregate sporting events (yes, even golf) by gender, but that gender gap will never ever close so long as people hold to your attitude.

          • Edward T. Haines says:

” but that gender gap will never ever close so long as people hold to your attitude.”
Perhaps you would be so kind as to inform me as to what my attitude is. You consistently inform pretty much anyone with whom you communicate what it is that they believe.

          • JMK says:

“Perhaps you would be so kind as to inform me as to what my attitude is.” (ETH)
            .
            .
Your apparent denying that there IS a gender gap, while pointing to examples that highlight it (the pitching speed differentials as an example here).

That “bigotry of low (in this case, no) expectations” is antithetical to the progress of any group that it’s applied to.

        • Edward T. Haines says:

I see now that you have made it clear. My comment that women who pitch fast pitch softball throw the ball at rather fast paces means that I deny any gender gap. That, in your mind equates to bigotry and no expectations. It is time for me to drop this conversation since it is going nowhere. I will simply state that it must be rather sad to exist and live in your world where other people always mean what you wish for them to mean and where you invariably wish for them to be bigoted and ignorant.

          • JMK says:

“My comment that women who pitch fast pitch softball throw the ball at rather fast paces means that I deny any gender gap.” (ETH)
            .
            .
            That’s NOT what you did!

What you did was highlight how much faster the men pitch.

That supported the need for the segregation of the genders in sports, which puts you in agreement with me!

Ed, I DO thank you for agreeing with me. There seems no need for any animosity between us two agreeing parties. I have none for you, in fact, I appreciate your agreeing with me!

That makes your petulance somewhat surprising and even off-putting to me.

“I’ve never personally seen a “God Hates Fags” sign.”

I have. Drove past a Westboro protest once. I have never personally seen the Jesus one. Guess I need to get out more.

    Steve

  4. JMK says:

That (“Which Is The Most Bigoted and Hateful?”) appears to be a trick question.

There is ONLY ONE of those signs that is “bigoted and hateful” (HINT: It ain’t the bumper sticker).

The fact that what passes for “homophobia” and “discrimination” TODAY are “opposing gay marriage” and supporting “transition services” in which the demand is created ostensibly by gays, proves that homosexuals DO NOT face discrimination or persecution at all here in the USA.

Gay people ARE NOT being denied housing, jobs, etc., IN FACT, in the video you posted clearly showed that “gayness” is itself now a “cause celeb!” Even Neanderthal, wait-staff abusing Executives like Adam Smith are enthusiastic even “gay” (as in giddy, NOT homo) supporters of homosexuality.
